Visibility and the Odds of Success

I’m a great believer in visibility. By this I mean that I don’t believe in fate per say, but that in addition to our predefined destiny we have some influence on what happens in our lives. Many of us go through our lives reacting to random or unforeseen events which we only have limited control over, chalking them up to a higher power. Is this really the way the our lives work? It seems to me that although events may sometimes swamp us, on a day to day level we have control over the course of our lives. If you choose to turn a light on, it turns on a large percentage of the time. From the other perspective, if you choose not to switch the light on, it stays off a large percentage of the time. By positioning yourself to turn the light on, there’s a fairly certain percentage that says it will turn on.

The trick as far as I can see it is to identify the random events that we’d like to happen, position ourselves in front of them and wait for the statistically alloted time for the event to occur. Of course positioning yourself in front of a lottery win by buying one ticket doesn’t mean you’re going to win. You can look on these occurances happening, but just not during the course of your lifetime. In essence you have to be visible, put yourself out there, and then what you intend to come true will. No light will turn on unless you flip the switch.

So equally, you can choose to be an entrepreneur. It’s different from choosing to want to be an entrepreneur. The moment that you take the first step towards being an entrepreneur, you already are and entrepreneur. So how do you flip the switch? Well, try something. The term “being outside your comfort zone” is a good reference to this. You’re not an entrepreneur now, so position yourself in front of an opportunity that can take you at least some of the way. Be visible to it.

By making yourself visible, you increase your chances of obtaining your goal. It’s like buying a lottery ticket. What you then want to do once you’ve taken that first step is increase the odds of you obtaining your goal. This could be a number of things, so to give examples:

1. Buy more tickets: Take more opportunities, more chances.
2. Stop others buying tickets: Get in first, and beat off the competition as best possible

3. Research the lottery workings, so you can buy tickets in future that are more likely to win: Knowledge is power

4. Form a syndicate, increasing your chances: You don’t need all the skills to be successful, you just need to know who does.

So if you want to be an entrepreneur take the steps that will put you in front of the lottery of success. In all probability, you already know what the first couple are.
